Description

Organic compound, salt of trivalent rare earth metal dysprosium and organic acetic acid. From water solutions crystallizes as tetrahydrate.

Precursors

Reaction between dysprosium(III) oxide, hydroxide or carbonate and acetic acid

Chemical equation:

6CH3COOH + Dy2O3 = 2Dy(CH3COO)3 + 3H2O
3CH3COOH + Dy(OH)3 = Dy(CH3COO)2 + 3H2O
6CH3COOH + Dy2(CO3)3 = 2Dy(CH3COO)3 + 3H2O + 3CO2

For preparation of 100.00g of dysprosium acetate tetrahydrate а 61.34g of dysprosium carbonate or 51.86g of hydroxide or 45.30g of oxide and 62.51g of 70% acetic acid or 145.87g of 30% acid is required.

Add acid to the flask, then add small parts of dysprosium compound with stirring until it will totally dissolve or, if you use carbonate, until carbon dioxide emission will stop. After reaction will stop, filter the solution and use it for crystal growing.

Storage conditions

Store in its original form or under several layers of varnish at average humidity and room temperature. Do not store in matchboxes or cotton wool and do not heat.

Solubility

Soluble in water. Insoluble in ethanol.
